When you have a generator that’s nicknamed “the beast,” you know you really have something special on your hands. The nickname is quite apt, as this generator is one of the most powerful in its class on the market. 

It has 12,000 surge watts and 9,500 running watts of power and the versatility that comes with this machine is truly impressive. It’s considered a “whole house” generator, and while it won’t actually power your entire house, you can get some serious use out of it.

This Duromax generator has a serious amount of power output, so you’re going to get a lot out of it. We mentioned the versatility and power that comes with this particular generator, but what else does it have to offer?

One of the great features about the Duromax is that it has exceptional power—quality generators above 10,000 are hard to find and cost an organ donation to purchase—and won’t require you to refinance your home to get one parked in your garage. 

It also doesn’t rely only on gasoline but propane as well. While the specs are a little different for each (in terms of run time and tank capacity) it’s an efficient generator on either or. Of course, that’s extremely beneficial for those who prefer some versatility in their fueling options.

You get a little bit more in the way of power when you run this generator on gas but honestly, the difference is really not that much considering what you’re likely going to run on this thing. The difference might boil down to a single cell phone that can’t be charged at peak output on propane.

That’s probably a little ridiculous but it illustrates the point that the difference is so minuscule that it’s not likely to matter in a real-life scenario. Typically, propane is more of a boost in fuel economy but that doesn’t really translate here, looking at the specs. 

It’s especially nice that you can fuel up both tanks and bounce between them. When the gasoline runs out you can simply switch it over to propane and vice versa if you want to go the other way with it. 

This generator has a 457cc engine and you’re going to hear every bit of it. Seventy-four decibels is not going to sound like a public library. While it’s not as loud as many other generators in the same weight class, you still may want to find a good placement for it. 

As of right now, propane is still a little cheaper than gas but it’s closing the gap relatively quickly, so that may not be the case for too much longer.

The rugged wheel design gives the Duromax a lot of versatility in terms of transportation. A lot of generators come with smaller, inefficient wheels because the assumption is made that the vast majority won’t go any farther than a garage. 

It also goes without saying that this thing was built to last. The wheels match the frame as everything was put together to create a very sturdy feeling generator. You’ll never get the feeling that the panels are about to drop off of this thing. 

The idle control panel is a neat feature that is a part of the control panel. Control panel features are often ignored when singing the praises or failures in generators and the idle control is worth mentioning enough to get it on the list. 

All it amounts to is a simplification protocol. A simple and quick flip of a switch will drop the engine into a more efficient and quiet running mode. ITs a good option to have at night when everyone is done for the day and going to bed.

The largest complaints lumped onto the Duromax boil down to weight and loudness. It does have quite the hefty feel to it. It is a solid design and there’s no doubt that the design features have created an additional bit of weight with this model. 

It is understandable that there are some complaints about the loudness of it. However, when compared to other generators, it’s surprisingly run-of-the-mill in terms of comparable decibels. So ultimately, it’s loud but no louder than anything else in the same class.

Potential Problems/Issues

If you really hit the Google search engines hard and pour over all of the customer reviews from Home Depot, Lowes, Amazon, and others, you’ll find that the largest complaint with the Duromax really doesn’t have anything to do with the generator itself.

The vast majority of complaints revolve around shipping and packaging issues. It’s an interesting issue to have since shipping options are pretty spread out with multiple distributors across the board. 

Customer service is occasionally brought up as well. If that’s the extent of it, Duromax’s focus needs to be in that direction for certain. It’s also worth mentioning that the customer service calls are primarily focused on the wheels. 

While there aren’t any recall issues with them, customers seem to be focused on that issue more than any other despite the rugged design and maneuverability of the Duromax.
